Delta Innovation Class lets a lucky passenger sit next to an industry mentor

Over the last few months Delta has been offering Innovation Class on its flights, giving a lucky customer the chance to sit next to some of the smartest people in the world in technology, business and the arts at 35,000ft.

Far be it from their co-passenger to steal their armrest, eat their mini-pretzels and fall asleep on their shoulder snoring; Delta try to find people that could benefit from the experience – on the first trip sitting digital visualisation geek James Patten next to Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky, and letting him pick his brain.

“It’s important to remember that people are the ones behind technology, both from the creators and the users. One of the coolest things you can do as a creator is go and talk to people,” said Migicovsky, preparing to board his flight.

It would be a great piece of social engineering if you could always have the chance to sit next to someone on a flight that might spark a conversation about a shared interest, rather than the single parent and their screaming child.

The final seat for this round of mentors is alongside online shopping site Gilt’s cofounder Alexandra Wilkis Wilson (sadly it’s already taken up) on her way to TechCrunch Disrupt, but we think it’s a great idea that should hopefully ‘take off’ again soon.
