Propshop printed one-third scale Aston Martin DB5s for Skyfall on a Voxeljet 3D printer

German large-format 3D printing company Voxeljet has announced today that it is to buy special effects house Propshop, known for making great use of its technologies.

Propshop will become Voxeljet UK, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company, and will continue to support the film and entertainment industry from its Pinewood Studios base, as well as continuing to satisfy the demand for its 3D printing services.

This move is a great idea for Voxeljet as it gives it some great marketing presence – Propshop has produced props and stand-ins for movies like the James Bond epic Skyfall, and the Batman flick The Dark Knight Rises – giving the company, which has entirely industrial purposed machines, a means to get in on the 3D printing buzz.

Propshop will become Voxeljet UK, and most likely add to its current Voxeljet VX1000 3D Printer

“We have a longstanding relationship with Propshop and are impressed with the business James and his team have developed over the years. Propshop’s innovation, creativity, and advanced experience with our 3D printing technology has made it a leading provider of sophisticated and complex content to the entertainment industry,” said Voxeljet CEO Dr. Ingo Ederer.

“These attributes and award-winning capabilities have presented Propshop with several new and very exciting consumer-related opportunities in the on-demand parts services market uniquely suited for large scale 3D printing production. Combining the expertise of both companies in this regard is an attractive arrangement. We are very happy to welcome Propshop into the voxeljet family.”
