Algorithms, digital fabrication, natural forms and decorative qualities all mix in Joris Laarman’s exhibition

On show at the Cooper Hewitt museum, Design in the Digital Age is a blast of digitally fabricated furniture by Dutch designer Joris Laarman.

The lab’s approach to smart algorithms, 3D printing and materials sees it trying to blur traditional distinctions between the natural and machine made, and also mix decorative with functional properties.

As well as plenty of seating, there’s a chance to get up close with a section of the MX3D bridge – being 3D printed by robots across a section of Amsterdam’s canal – that we featured earlier this year.
