Reports in the Canadian media suggest that Autodesk has acquired Lagoa for around $60m

UPDATE: After going straight to the source at Autodesk, we’ve been told that they haven’t acquired Lagoa. We’ll keep you updated should anything change

Lagoa, the cloud-based 3D rendering software has been reportedly acquired by Autodesk for over $60 million.

Having only launched properly in April 2013, the company raised $6.9 million through two rounds of funding, much of it from Cambridge-based Atlas Ventures.

Lagoa was aimed at moving the 3D rendering process to the cloud, changing the way product development teams collaborate on the design and marketing of the finished product.
In our review of the product in January this year we stated that a cloud-based solution is was still in development.

“Some people just aren’t comfortable with having their data on the cloud. For those that are or those interested in exploring an alternative to local compute heavy rendering systems, then it’s an interesting offering.

“It’s clear that the team is hammering away at the service as we speak and are adding in all those little details that a professional audience is looking for.”

Since presenting at this year’s DEVELOP3D LIVE the product has moved on further, to the point where it seems Autodesk has bought it.

We’ll wait for the official announcement, but with Autodesk’s backing it will be interesting to see where this cloud-based renderer fits amongst all its stable of visualisation products.
