Dremel’s 3D printer sadly doesn’t come with a 165-piece accessory kit

Dremel has entered the 3D printing market with this $999 desktop FDM machine

Dremel, the producer of the much beloved Multitool drill/polisher/whizzing thing, is now selling its first 3D printer – the Idea Builder.

On firsts glance it appears to be a standard desktop FDM dressed up as a child’s cupcake oven, yet Home Depot, Amazon and Canadian Tire have jumped at the exclusive sales rights, selling it at $999.

However, the tool company suggests that this is more than a one-off product, forming a partnership with Autodesk to help provide free print-ready 3D models and online design tools.

The machine is aimed at the first-time user, coming complete with a back catalogue of free, downloadable 3D models to print, and copious help tutorials online

“This is just the beginning for us,” said company president John Kavanagh. “We’ll be offering an increased number of customizers on our site that will further empower people to develop and personalise projects of their own. Long-term, the partnership with Autodesk will allow us to bring together hardware and software to better address the needs of our community.”

Expect to see more from Dremel in the near future, but we wouldn’t hold our breath about it getting a 20-piece enamel engraving accessory set just yet.
