Reinvent the steering wheel for Ford and win a once in a lifetime trip to Cologne to meet its design team

We’re offering you the unique chance to design a concept for automotive giant Ford, and win a trip to meet its European design team and tour its facilities in Cologne, Germany.

Ford of Britain and DEVELOP3D are offering you the chance to design a new concept that reinvents the Ford steering wheel.

We want to hear from designers from all industries, who do not necessarily have experience in the automotive industry, the more creative the better!

Design concepts will need to be submitted in the form of digital sketches or hand drawn images sent as a PDF or JPG to DEVELOP3D by 7 November, 2014

To entice you further in putting pen to paper Ford will be offering the winning designer a trip to Cologne, Germany this December to spend the day with the Ford Europe design team and workshop.

In addition to this one-off experience the winning designer will have their concept featured in the December / January issue of DEVELOP3D, showcasing their work to a wide audience.

The competition is open to UK entrants only and design concepts will need to be submitted in the form of digital sketches or hand drawn images sent as a PDF or JPG to DEVELOP3D by 7 November, 2014.

All entries will be judged by a panel comprised of DEVELOP3D editorial staff and Ford’s senior design team. As part of the prize the winner will also be gifted a Ford design watch.

Some inspiration? How about this 1965 Ford GT40 steering wheel

Need some inspiration? We took a trip back in time with Ford UK to Goodwood Revival, getting our hands on a rare GT40 road car, a ‘60s Mustang, and a ‘70s Escort Mexico amongst others.

Design a steering wheel

My steering wheel design would have the following features: Heated - great for cold days. Vibration feedback to driver if car senses danger such as too close to car in front. Push steering wheel hard forwards and the car will brake in an emergency. Sensors in wheel to detect if you are holding wheel correctly and will alert if based on road conditions if you need to hold wheel tighter. Non slippery surface to wheel that is nice to hold.

Haptic feedback linked to lane departure and blind spot warnings ...plus a drum machine or steel pans when I'm at lights!

My dream would be a totally automatic steering wheel - the perfect design, No interference from me would suit me fine! It could stay in lane or overtake, And even manage a sudden brake! When I felt the need to manually drive, My steering wheel would have special features to keep me alive... It would keep me alert with a shot of cold air And have an airbag for peace of mind- just to know it's there. A noisy horn to make others aware - Our current one has a squeak that doesn't even get the slightest stare! Finally my design needs to be Tailored to suit the feminine needs of me! Warm in winter but super cool too, Purple and squishy, and always smelling like new. When manually steering, I want a voice activated deal So that I never have to take my hands off of the wheel!
