Varjo has added two new ‘industrial-grade’ VR headsets to its product range: The ‘human eye-resolution’ VR-2 and the VR-2 Pro feature integrated eye tracking and better software compatibility that now includes support for SteamVR and OpenVR.

The VR-2 Pro also adds advanced integrated hand tracking by Ultraleap (formerly Leap Motion) to support more intuitive interactions with high-fidelity VR content.

Support for SteamVR is an important development for design focused pro VR applications. The headsets will now work with Luxion KeyVR, Gravity Sketch and Mindesk VR, as well as the architectural focused Iris VR and Enscape, and others.
The new headsets also feature hardware improvements, including Varjo’s next-generation Bionic Display with what it says is even better peripheral vision and colour consistency.

Building on Varjo’s advanced 20/20 Eye Tracker technology, the new products are said to offer even faster and more accurate calibration performance.

“We have seen first-hand what the power of human-eye resolution in VR can offer in terms of expanding the realm of applications for the enterprise,” said Urho Konttori, co-founder and chief product officer of Varjo.

“Today we bring the Resolution Revolution overnight to nearly all industrial applications, unlocking the next level of professional VR. With VR-2 and VR-2 Pro, professionals can benefit from the industry’s highest visual fidelity and the most precise eye tracking joining forces with the leading hand tracking technology.”

Varjo’s VR headsets achieve their ‘human eye resolution’ capability by using two different displays for each eye: the high pixel density ‘focus window’ in the centre and the ‘context display’ for the peripheral vision, with the images from both displays blended together.

It means stitching on leather and the weave of fabrics on furniture pop into life in realistic detail and tiny text, car dashboards and dials, which might be nothing but a blur on other headsets, are easily legible.

The VR-2 and the VR-2 Pro are available for sale starting today at $4,995 and $5,995 respectively, sold together with Varjo’s software and support services starting at $795.
