The blue model comes in 250GB and 500GB capacities while the deep black comes in 1TB and 2TB capacities

Samsung has squeezed another 100MB/sec out of its external USB Solid State Drive (SSD) technology with a new T5 model announced today.

The Samsung Portable SSD T5 delivers up to 540MB/sec data transfer speeds (540MB/sec read, 515MB/sec write) through a USB 3.1 Gen.2 (10Gbps) connection. However, our experience shows that these are idealised figure for large continuous datasets, like point clouds or video, so don’t expect to get these kinds of speeds when copying 1,000s of CAD parts and assemblies.

AMD set to change the rendering game with $999 16-core Ryzen Threadripper CPU

AMD has launched Ryzen Threadripper, a new family of high-end desktop CPUs which feature up to 16 cores and cost under $1,000.

This is massive news for users of rendering software, such as Chaos Group V-Ray, Luxion KeyShot or any of the CAD-based CPU renderers - all of which can take advantage of multiple CPU cores to cut render times.

Previously, in order to get hold of a desktop CPU with such a high core count, users have had to invest in one or two Intel Xeon E5 Series CPUs, which are significantly more expensive.

Dell unveils new Skylake-SP Xeon workstations

The new Precision workstations feature ‘FlexBays’ that support a range of modules, including one that offers hot swap access to M.2 NVMe SSDs from the front of the machine

Dell has released details of its next generation workstations which will be based on the forthcoming Intel Xeon Scalable Processor family, built around Skylake-SP, with up to 28 cores per CPU.

The single socket Dell Precision 5820 Tower and dual socket Dell Precision 7820 and 7920 Towers will launch this October.

All three machines will feature re-designed chassis with front access ‘FlexBays’ that support a range of modules, including lockable hard drive carriers and a Smart Card (CAC/PIV) reader.

HP launches global design project to imagine life on Mars

Is there life on Mars? Yes - 1 million humans to be precise.

From buildings and vehicles, to farms and clothing, what could life on Mars look like to support a human population of one million?

This is the question being raised by HP Mars Home Planet, a new global project that challenges engineers, architects, designers, artists and students to imagine, design and experience humanity’s future on the red planet through VR.

The HP Mars Home Planet project advances work initially done for Mars 2030, a virtual reality experience created by Fusion with NASA.

HP launches workstation backpack for untethered pro VR

HP has launched the world’s first professional wearable VR workstation, the HP Z VR Backpack G1, a compact machine that doubles as a desktop, runs off batteries in VR backpack mode, leaving no trailing cables.

The custom workstation is designed to get around the limitations of traditional tethered VR setups where the user can be restricted in movement or lose the feeling of immersion if the cord gets tangled up or tugs on the head.

HP says freedom of movement can be particularly important in collaborative design review when moving around a large-scale project such as a car.

Epic Games optimises viz and VR workflow from CAD to Unreal Engine

Epic Games is looking to simplify and optimise the process of importing CAD and DCC data into Unreal Engine for architectural and design visualisation.

At Siggraph today, the company gave a technology preview of a new workflow toolkit for the popular game engine, which is used for real time design viz and VR.

Datasmith provides a high-fidelity translation of numerous common scene assets including geometry, textures, materials, lights and cameras. One of the key aims is to significantly reduce the amount of rework content creators need to carry out in the engine, particularly when working with ever-changing design assets, resulting in significant time savings.

Nvidia uses AI to deliver 8x speed boost to ray trace rendering

Nvidia takes a ‘noisy’ ray traced image and uses AI to predict what it would look like after thousands of passes

Nvidia is looking to rewrite the ray trace rendering rule book by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to massively accelerate the time-consuming process, rather than simply using brute force processing.

The GPU manufacturer is using AI to significantly lower the number of light ray bounces needed to get a ‘correct picture’. Nvidia says speed ups are in the region of 8x faster on the same GPU hardware.

Nvidia’s AI-enhanced ray tracing works by rendering a ‘noisy’ image with minimal light ray bounces and then predicting what the final image would look like if it was rendered with thousands of bounces.
