Find out more about the Dell Precision 7510 and the other new members of Dell’s mobile workstation family

With a brand new industrial design, the new Dell Precision mobile workstations with AMD FirePro graphics are significantly lighter and thinner than previous generation machines. They are also more powerful, featuring next generation technologies in all areas – from CPU, GPU and storage to memory, display and I/O.

There are three new Dell Precision mobile workstations with AMD FirePro graphics, to suit all budgets and requirements.

The 15-inch Dell Precision 3510 is ideal for entry-level to mid-range CAD users who want the reliability and performance of an Independent Software Vendor (ISV) certified mobile workstation and a budget friendly price tag.

The 15-inch Dell Precision 7510 is an expandable desktop replacement for CAD/CAM/CAE with balanced portability and performance.

The 17-inch Dell Precision 7710 is perfect for designers who want desktop workstation-class performance in a mobile form factor. With high-end AMD FIrePro W7170M graphics it is suitable for even the most demanding 3D applications.

A new industrial design

All of the new Dell Precision mobile workstations feature a brand new industrial design with durable carbon fibre exterior and a magnesium alloy chassis. This, along with new small form factor M.2 Solid State Drives (SSDs), compact Lithium Ion polymer batteries and by removing legacy features such as the optical drive, has helped significantly reduce size and weight. The Dell Precision 3510, for example, is up to 27% thinner and 11% lighter than its predecessor, the Dell Precision M2800.

The new chassis design also benefits performance. The cooling solution in the Precision 7510 and Precision 7710 is so advanced that even the most processor-intensive applications will benefit from never dropping out of turbo frequencies.

AMD FirePro GPUs

Dell Precision mobile workstations with AMD FirePro professional graphics offer a powerful and reliable platform for advanced 3D CAD/CAM/CAE and design viz software.

The AMD FirePro W5130M (2GB GDDR5) is well suited to small to medium size CAD assembly modelling in applications such as Dassault Systemes SOLIDWORKS, Autodesk Inventor and PTC Creo.

The AMD FirePro W5170M (2GB GDDR5) can handle larger CAD assemblies and higher quality real time rendering effects, such as those produced in SolidWorks RealView or Siemens NX True Shading.

The AMD FirePro W7170M (4GB GDDR5) is ideal for high-end CAD or more demanding 3D design visualisation workflows. With almost 3 TFLOPS of single precision compute power, the GPU can also be used to accelerate OpenCL applications such as the new AMD FireRender ray trace renderer.

Intel ‘Skylake’ CPUs

The new Dell Precision mobile workstations feature Intel ‘Skylake’ 6th Generation Intel Core and the world’s first mobile Intel Xeon processors.

Quad Core CPUs are standard, which is ideal for CAD and entry-level ray tracing rendering or Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) workflows. Models range from the Intel Core i5-6300HQ (2.30Ghz, 3.20GHz Turbo) at the low-end to the Intel Core i7-6920HQ (2.90GHz, 3.80GHz Turbo) at the high-end.

Intel Xeon will be available early next year, including the Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 (Quad Core, 2.80GHz, 3.70GHz Turbo), which will feature in all three machines, and the Intel Xeon E3-1535M v5 (Quad Core, 2.90GHz, 3.80GHz Turbo), which will only be in the Dell Precision 7510 and Dell Precision 7710. More Intel Xeon processors, including the Xeon Ex-xxx Z2+ and Xeon Ex-xxx Z3+, are slated for release later in 2016.

Memory

There are three main advancements in memory: capacity, performance, and reliability.

The doubling of capacity is a step change for mobile workstations as it will allow users of CAD/CAM/CAE and design viz software to work with significantly larger datasets than ever before. The Precision 3510 can now support up to 32GB, while the Precision 7510 and Precision 7710 can have up to 64GB.

Dell will initially launch with fast DDR4 2133MHz memory but will introduce DDR4 2667MHz overclocked memory later. This should be of particular interest to users of memory intensive CAE applications as it should help decrease Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solve times.

Thanks to the introduction of Intel Xeon, Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory is now supported on Dell Precision mobile workstations for the first time. With the ability to fix memory errors this should appeal in particular to engineers who want to protect against crashes during lengthy simulations.

Storage

The new Dell Precision mobile workstations benefit in two areas when it comes to storage. The first is speed.

The availability of new generation M.2 NVMe PCIe Solid State Drives (SSDs) should have a significant performance benefit in I/O intensive workflows such as engineering simulation, point cloud processing and video editing.

Also, by standardising on the M.2 form factor Dell has been able to reduce the number of 2.5-inch drive bays in its higher end mobile workstations, helping cut down on size and weight.

Display

Display technology has also moved on with 4K (3,840 x 2,160) displays available on both the Dell Precision 7510 and Dell Precision 7710. This should be of particular interest to those who demand pin sharp clarity when viewing CAD models, simulation results or vivid product renderings. The Dell Precision 3510 is limited to HD (1,920 x 1,080), but it does have a touch screen option.

Other features of the new machines include optional Thunderbolt 3, which is coming early 2016. USB 3.0 is standard throughout.

Conclusion

In summary, with a brand new lightweight slimline design coupled with next generation CPU, GPU, memory, storage, display and I/O technology there has never been a more compelling reason to upgrade your CAD-class mobile workstation.
